Frequently Asked Questions
Have more questions? Then this section is for you!
I’m planning to move abroad! When is the best time to schedule a consultation?
Good for you for being proactive! We generally recommend scheduling a first consultation prior to booking your departure dates. Tax planning (and potentially tax saving!) opportunities may be available depending on when you leave and where you’re going.
What are the main things that change when filing US taxes from abroad?
Many things change! The main ones to be aware of are the tax filing deadline (expats get an automatic extension to June 15th, with two others available upon request), and that you will likely need to file the foreign tax return before the US return. So, it’s important to be aware of what new taxes will affect you as a resident in your new country!
Can you help me understand what taxes I’ll be liable for in my new country?
Often, yes. At a high level, we’re familiar with many foreign tax systems because we adapt the US tax filing based on where the taxpayer is based. Factors such as the existence of tax treaties, Totalization Agreements, and estate treaties all play a role in shaping how your US return can be filed to eliminate or minimize your US tax liability. We also maintain strong relationships with local experts to ensure we’re always providing you with the most current information.
That’s great! So, can you do my foreign taxes too?
Unfortunately, we do not offer foreign tax filing services at this time. However, when you work with us, we’ll often be able to refer you to a trusted partner in our network of foreign providers, which can facilitate getting both returns done correctly and on time.
Why does it matter whether or not my CPA has experience working with Americans who live abroad? Isn’t it all just filing taxes?
Like any profession, accounting has many different specialties, such as auditing, financial, and managerial. Expat taxes fall under the international tax & accounting services, which involve working knowledge of how the US tax rules and regulations affect its taxpayers living abroad. The US Tax Code & Regulations are generally familiar to most CPAs. However, the international tax provisions are not commonly studied or used in practice. Due to their complexity, it usually takes a seasoned specialist to ensure that your structure/situation is in compliance / reported with completeness and accuracy. When you partner with us, our expertise goes into saving you money, fully complying with the IRS, and bringing you peace of mind that everything was done correctly.
