    Frequently Asked Questions

How is international tax compliance different from normal compliance?
Compliance takes on added significance for US expat business owners and foreign entrepreneurs in the US. From managing cross-border filing requirements to keeping up with evolving tax regulations, you want to ensure you’re familiar with local laws and how your tax residence impacts your US filing strategy. At Rook CPAs, we monitor local tax laws that could impact your business tax filings, so you’re protected and prepared at all times.
I’m moving abroad with a business. Do I still need to file US taxes?
Yes, Americans abroad are subject to something called “citizenship-based taxation” which requires US citizens, green card holders, and certain US-connected individuals to continue filing annual tax returns with the IRS even if you reside outside of the US.
So, I pay taxes twice on my business’ income?!
No, you will most likely not be double taxed on your business income. The US has individual tax treaties with many foreign countries, which explain how tax residence is determined, to whom tax is owed, how it is paid, and what credits, exclusions, and exemptions are allowed when filing the US return.
That sounds like it can get complicated quickly. Can a US accountant handle business tax returns for Americans living abroad?
Of course we’re a bit biased here, but especially when it comes to businesses, we cannot emphasize the difference an expat CPA with demonstrated expertise in designing global tax strategies can make to a business’ bottom line. Think of it as an investment in the long-term health of your business, protecting you from straying afoul of the IRS and ensuring your business is as tax efficient as possible.
Can I keep my business based in the US if I move abroad?
It depends on where you’re moving. Some countries, such as Portugal and Spain, offer visa pathways that enable you to keep your business based in the US. Other countries, such as France, require you to open a business based in France.
